How to identify Serve+1 patterns in footage

Tracking Serve+1 requires pairing each serve with the following shot. The process looks like this:

  1. Log each serve — direction (T / body / wide), court side (deuce / ad), first or second serve.
  2. Pair with the Serve+1 — if the return comes back, note the direction, depth, and shot type of the next ball the server plays.
  3. Flag unforced deviations — if the serve goes wide but the Serve+1 goes cross-court instead of down the line, note it. Inconsistencies in the pattern are as informative as the pattern itself.
  4. Isolate pressure points — break points, tight games, tiebreaks. Does the pattern hold or narrow?

A minimum of 3 matches gives you enough data for meaningful Serve+1 patterns on most serves — you'll see the dominant sequences clearly even in a moderate sample. More matches reveal the tails of the distribution and the pressure-point behaviour.

  • "After a wide serve on the ad side: forehand inside-out winner attempt, 58%. Under pressure, this increases to 74% — the opponent commits to this pattern at important moments."
  • "On second serve from the deuce side: the Serve+1 is almost always a backhand cross-court reset (82%). No aggressive play after second serve from this side — opportunity to attack the third ball."

These statements give a player something they can hold in their head and act on without thinking. That's the point of Serve+1 analysis — not data for its own sake, but pattern-awareness that reduces the cognitive load in a match.
