Opponent scouting is one of those tasks that always feels like it should happen — and rarely does to the standard coaches want. The draw drops late, the footage is scattered, and the structured analysis that would actually help gets replaced by memory and rough impressions.

This guide lays out a practical framework for how to scout a tennis opponent systematically. It's built around the information categories that actually change a game plan — not a data wish-list, but a working structure coaches can apply to real footage in real time.

Why systematic opponent scouting matters

Tennis is a sport of habits. At every level of the professional game — from Challenger to Grand Slam — players have tendencies they return to under pressure. Their serve placement clusters in predictable zones. Their second-serve target is nearly always the same. Their Serve+1 shot is a pattern, not a choice.

A player who walks onto court knowing those patterns has a structural advantage. They're not reacting — they're pre-empting. The serve goes to the backhand 78% of the time on deuce points: you know where to position your return. Under pressure, they go short cross-court: you're already moving.

The problem isn't that coaches don't know this. The problem is extraction time. Charting a full match properly — logging every serve, tracking every Serve+1, noting pressure-point patterns — takes three to four hours of careful scrubbing. For a touring coach managing multiple players, that's a night's sleep, not an analysis session.

The five areas that change a game plan

Not all information is equally useful before a match. Effective scouting focuses on the patterns that are both consistent enough to rely on and specific enough to act on. There are five areas that reliably fall into that category:

1. Serve placement and distribution

Where does the player serve, and when? First serve vs. second serve patterns often diverge significantly. Deuce side vs. ad side patterns diverge further. Under pressure — at 30-40, at 5-6 in the third — the distribution narrows. Most players have one "safe" serve they return to when the stakes rise.

What you're looking for: the T serve percentage on the deuce side, the body serve frequency on the ad side, and — critically — how those percentages shift on break points and tight games. That last data point is where the pattern becomes exploitable.

2. Serve+1 shot selection

The point after the serve is where most tactical patterns become visible. After a wide serve, does the player come in? Attack the open court? Reset? The Serve+1 pattern is often more consistent than the serve itself — because it's the continuation of a pre-planned sequence, not a reactive shot.

Tracking Serve+1 requires pairing each serve with the next shot: direction, depth, shot type. The data is richer than serve placement alone, and it reveals patterns that individual shot data misses — because it shows how a player *constructs* a point rather than just where they start it.

3. Return tendencies

Return patterns are often the most underanalysed area in pre-match scouting. Where does this player return from? Do they chip the backhand return or drive it? Do they come in on short serves? What happens to their return depth when they're under pressure — does it get shorter, safer, more predictable?

Return patterns are especially valuable when you have a server whose patterns you can control — because knowing where the return will land lets you position the Serve+1 before the point starts.

4. Rally tendencies and shot direction

In baseline exchanges, what does this player default to? Which wing do they use to change direction vs. which do they stabilise from? Do they go down-the-line under pressure or retreat cross-court? Where does their unforced error rate spike — shot type, direction, game situation?

Rally patterns are often where weaknesses show up most clearly. Not in the obvious sense of "their backhand is weak" — but in the specific sense of "when pushed wide to the forehand side, their cross-court return is short and mid-height 65% of the time." That's actionable.

5. Pressure-point behaviour

How does this player's pattern change on big points? Do they become more conservative or more aggressive? Do they go to a preferred shot, or do they avoid certain shots that have cost them points before? Some players tighten significantly at 30-40 or tiebreaks — their serve pattern narrows, their groundstroke direction becomes predictable.

Pressure-point data requires more matches to be statistically meaningful — but even a sample of 15-20 tight games reveals tendencies that can inform your player's tactics on the most important points of the match.

How to structure the footage review

A structured review process makes the work faster and more consistent. Here's a practical workflow:

  1. First pass — serve only. Scrub through the match and log every serve: side, type (T/body/wide), first/second. Don't try to track what comes next. This pass gives you the distribution data quickly.
  2. Second pass — Serve+1. Go back through and pair each serve with the next shot. This is where you'll spend the most time, but it's also where the most tactical information lives.
  3. Third pass — pressure points only. Filter to break points, 5-all, tiebreaks. What changes? This pass doesn't need to be exhaustive — you're looking for deviations from the baseline patterns.
  4. Pattern synthesis. From the raw data, extract 3-5 statements a player can hold in their head. Not a spreadsheet — conclusions. "Second serve goes to the backhand T on the ad side, 72% of the time. First Serve+1 is usually a forehand cross-court — position early."
Key principle: A scouting report is only useful if a player can act on it during a match. The goal isn't comprehensive data — it's three to five conclusions that change how they approach points. Prioritise clarity over completeness.

What to include in the pre-match report

The output of a scouting session should fit on one or two pages. The format matters as much as the content — because a player reading a report in the locker room before warm-up doesn't have time for a data appendix.

A functional pre-match report contains:

  • Serve map — visual or tabular distribution by side and type, with pressure-point flags
  • Serve+1 pattern — the dominant sequence(s), with direction and shot type
  • Key weakness flags — two or three specific exploitable patterns with confidence levels
  • Game plan summary — a short-form version the player can internalise in five minutes

The confidence level on weakness flags matters. Reporting a pattern based on 4 data points is different from reporting one based on 40. Honesty about sample size is part of what makes a report trustworthy — and therefore actually used.

How many matches do you need?

The minimum for meaningful serve pattern data is around 3 matches on the same surface. For Serve+1 and pressure-point patterns, 5 matches gives you more reliable conclusions — but 3 is workable if the surface and conditions are consistent.

If you only have one match available, it's still worth charting — but be explicit about the confidence limits. Patterns from a single match are hypotheses, not conclusions.

The time problem — and what to do about it

The honest constraint in opponent scouting is time. A thorough chart of a single 90-minute match takes three to four hours when done manually (the notation system and layered workflow are covered in how to chart a tennis match). For a touring coach with a draw dropping at 6pm and a match at 11am, that's not a viable workflow.
