To chart a tennis match, record — for every point — the server, the score, the serve placement (wide, body or T), whether it was a first or second serve, and how the point ended. That minimum takes one line of notation per point and produces, by itself, a usable scouting read: where the opponent serves, where they go under pressure, and what their second serve does. Everything beyond that — Serve+1, return depth, rally patterns — is a layer you add if the time budget allows. The mistake is trying to chart everything on the first pass and producing a mess that answers nothing.
Before you chart: decide what question you're answering
A chart is only as useful as the question behind it. Scouting an opponent for a specific match, the question is narrow: "what does this player do repeatedly, and what do they do when it matters?" That's different from charting your own player for development (where technique and error profiles matter more), and it changes what you track. Opponent charting is pattern-hunting — you can ignore whole categories, like stroke mechanics, that a development chart would need. The minimum viable chart: serve placement by situation
If you track only one thing, track the serve. It's the most repeatable shot in tennis, the easiest to see clearly (even from the stands), and the pattern most directly convertible into a game plan — your player stands somewhere different tomorrow because of it.
The working grid has four dimensions, and a simple tally in each cell:
- Court side: deuce vs ad — servers are different people on each side.
- Serve number: first vs second — the second-serve pattern is usually the more exploitable one.
- Placement: wide, body, T. Three zones only. Resist finer resolution; you'll misjudge it live and it rarely changes the conclusion.
- Score situation: at minimum, flag pressure points — break points, 30-30 and beyond. Under pressure, most players shrink to their trusted serve, and that's the one your player needs to know about.
Layer two: Serve+1 and Return+1
Once serve placement is automatic, add the shot that follows. Serve+1 — the server's first shot after the serve — reveals the point the server is trying to construct; deliberate serve-wide-then-open-court combinations show up in the chart within a handful of service games. Return+1 does the same for the returner's intent: neutralise, redirect, or attack. Layer two roughly doubles the attention cost. From video it's comfortable; live it's the edge of what one person can sustain. If you're charting live, keep layer two for the opponent's service games only.
Layer three: rally enders and pressure behaviour
The final layer is how points end (winner, forced error, unforced error — and off which wing) and how patterns shift on big points. This is where a chart starts distinguishing a genuine weakness from noise: an "unforced" backhand error count means little by itself, but backhand errors that cluster when the rally goes cross-court past four shots is a finding you can plan around. Charting live vs from video
From video is better whenever it's an option. You can pause, rewind, and confirm — which is why a video chart supports all three layers, while a live chart honestly supports one. Live charting still earns its place when no footage exists (common below tour level — our Challenger scouting guide deals with exactly that scarcity), but scope it down: serve placement on a paper grid, pressure points flagged, nothing else. A phone on a fence post, where filming is permitted, turns tonight's live chart into tomorrow's video chart.
The honest time budget
A full three-layer chart of a best-of-three match from video takes 3–4 hours including the summary — a number that surprises coaches the first time, and matches what full-time analysts budget. A triaged chart (serve placement + Serve+1 + pressure points only) compresses to 60–90 minutes. Charting two or three of an opponent's matches — which you need, because single-match patterns lie — multiplies accordingly. From chart to game plan
The chart is raw material, not the deliverable. The last step is compression: tallies become percentages, percentages become two or three sentences a player can hold — "second serve leans body-backhand under pressure; be ready to step in."
