Building a structured pre-match opponent analysis used to be something only top-20 programmes could afford in staff hours. That's changing. But the methodology — what goes into a report that's actually useful — has been consistent for years. This guide covers that structure.
What a pre-match opponent report is trying to do
A pre-match report has one job: give a player two or three tactical edges they can hold in their head and act on during the match. It's not a data archive. It's not a comprehensive record of everything the opponent has ever done. It's a condensed tactical brief — written to be read in 10 minutes, internalized in 20, and applied under match pressure.
That constraint shapes everything about how good reports are structured. Information that can't be acted on in real time doesn't belong in the player-facing document. Data that's statistically ambiguous should be flagged, not presented as fact. The goal is confidence and clarity, not completeness.
The data inputs: what analysts are working from
Most professional opponent analysis is built from match footage — typically 3 to 5 matches on the same or similar surface, from the past 6 to 12 months. The surface filter matters: a player's serve pattern on clay can differ significantly from their pattern on hard courts, particularly in how aggressively they construct points off the first serve.
The quality of the analysis depends heavily on the quality of the charting — shot-by-shot data logged from the footage. At the elite level, this means tagging every point with serve direction, serve type, shot sequence, rally length, and point outcome. It's meticulous work, and it's why full opponent analysis has traditionally required either a staff analyst or a significant time investment from the coach.
Secondary inputs — recent match commentary, player interviews, surface-specific statistics from official sources — supplement the footage analysis but don't replace it. Patterns extracted from charted footage are the most reliable tactical intelligence because they're behavioural, not reported.
The structure of a match-ready report
1. Player snapshot
A brief current-form summary: recent results, surface record, ranking trajectory, any known physical status. This is context, not analysis — it takes one paragraph. Its purpose is to calibrate how much weight to put on the tactical findings. A player in strong form is more likely to execute their patterns; a player on a losing streak may be making tactical adjustments you won't see in the footage.
2. Serve analysis
The most charted section of any opponent report. Serve analysis covers placement distribution by side (deuce vs. ad) and serve number (first vs. second), with pressure-point flags where the data is sufficient. The key outputs are:
- Dominant serve directions by side and serve number
- How distribution shifts on break points or tight games
- Second serve patterns specifically — because second serves are slower, more predictable, and represent the highest-value return opportunity
Serve analysis is typically visualised as a court diagram with frequency overlays — not because it looks good, but because spatial information is faster to process than a table when you're reviewing at 6am before a match.
3. Serve+1 and point construction patterns
This is where the analysis moves from "where does the serve go" to "what does the player do next." Serve+1 patterns — the first groundstroke after the serve — are often more tactically informative than serve placement alone, because they reveal how the player is trying to win the point, not just start it.
A well-structured Serve+1 section will pair each dominant serve direction with the most likely next shot: direction, depth, shot type. It will also flag situations where the pattern breaks — because knowing when a player deviates from their sequence is as valuable as knowing the sequence itself.
4. Return tendencies
How does this player return serve? Return analysis covers preferred return direction by serve type, return depth and pace, and whether the player chip-and-approaches, drives, or resets from different positions. Return patterns are especially useful for planning the server's first-strike game — if you know where the return will land, you can position the Serve+1 before the point even starts.
5. Weakness flags
The most action-relevant section of any report. Weakness flags are specific patterns that the data shows breaking down under certain conditions — shots that produce errors at higher-than-baseline rates, positions the player avoids, situations where their decision-making deteriorates.
Each weakness flag should include a confidence level tied to sample size. A weakness identified across 40 data points is a different quality of finding from one identified across 6. Coaches and players need to know the difference — a high-confidence weakness shapes the game plan; a low-confidence one is a hypothesis to test, not a plan to commit to.
6. Game plan summary
The last section, and the one the player actually reads right before warm-up. A game plan summary distils the entire report into 4-6 bullet points — tactical priorities the player can internalise and execute. It reads like a coaching cue sheet, not an analysis document:
- Attack the second serve from the deuce side — it goes to the backhand T 74% of the time, with low pace.
- After a wide serve on the ad side, expect a forehand cross-court into the open court — position left early on the return.
- On break points, they go to the body serve on the deuce side consistently. Be ready to step around.
These aren't predictions — they're pattern-aware cues that increase the probability of being in the right position on the right balls.
How many matches do you need?
For serve placement data, 3 matches on the same surface will give you a reliable distribution — enough to identify the dominant patterns with confidence. For Serve+1 and pressure-point behaviour, 5 matches is the more useful threshold, particularly for players who play with a lot of tactical variation.
If you only have one match available, it's still worth charting. Treat the findings as directional hypotheses rather than confirmed patterns, and note that explicitly in the report. One match is better than no data — but it should be presented differently to a player than a 5-match sample.
The time constraint that changes everything
Every touring coach knows the rhythm: draw drops Friday, match is Saturday or Sunday morning. That gives you 12 to 18 hours from draw confirmation to match day. If the opponent analysis needs to be done in that window — charted, analysed, synthesised, presented to the player — the labour cost of manual charting is often prohibitive.
This is the practical constraint that shapes how opponent analysis gets done at different levels of the game. Elite programmes have full-time analysts who can turn around footage quickly. Everyone else is improvising — relying on memory, summary statistics, and partial charting. The gap between what a coach knows they should have and what they actually have time to produce is where most pre-match preparation falls short.
