Once the serve and return are behind us, the point becomes a rally — and rallies are where matches are actually won or lost. Yet the rally is the phase coaches scout least precisely, usually because it feels formless. It isn't. Players fall into a small number of preferred shapes: the direction they favour when they take control, the ball they default to when they're stretched, the pattern they run to finish. Rally pattern analysis is the work of finding those shapes so your player can anticipate them instead of reacting to them.
The goal is narrow and worth stating up front: you are not trying to describe every rally. You are trying to identify the two or three repeatable sequences an opponent returns to under normal and pressured conditions. Everything below is a method for isolating those from the noise.
Define where the rally starts
The first practical decision is where you draw the line between the opening exchange and the rally proper. The serve and the shot after it are their own pattern — if you haven't scouted that yet, start with what Serve+1 is and why coaches track it. The same is true on the return side with Return+1. Rally pattern analysis picks up on roughly the fourth or fifth ball, once neither player is executing a pre-planned first strike and the point is genuinely neutral.
Why this matters: if you fold the serve-plus-one balls into your rally counts, you contaminate the rally data with patterns the player only runs off their own serve. Keep them separate. The rally read you want is what the opponent does when the point has reset to even and someone has to build an advantage from scratch.
Chart direction before shot type
The single most useful rally variable is direction — specifically, whether a player changes the line of the ball or keeps it going in the same direction. Most points are built cross-court because it's the higher-percentage, lower-risk ball. The tactical information lives in the exceptions: when does this player go down the line, and off which wing?
Log every neutral rally ball as one of four things: cross-court, down the line, inside-out, or inside-in. Keep the forehand and backhand columns separate. What you're looking for is the trigger — the condition under which a player abandons the safe cross-court ball and commits to changing direction. Common triggers include a short ball, a specific wing being attacked, or simply a certain court position. Find the trigger and you've found the moment your player can cover the line early.
Find the plus-2 and plus-3 ball
Coaches who track Serve+1 sometimes stop there, but many players have a reliable third and fifth ball — a way they like to build once the first strike hasn't ended the point. This is the rally equivalent of a set play. A server who consistently follows a wide serve with a forehand to the open court, then looks to close behind a down-the-line ball on the next shot, is running a three-shot pattern that repeats far more often than chance.
To catch these, tag sequences rather than individual balls. When you review, note the two- and three-shot chains that show up repeatedly from the same starting position. You won't find many — three or four genuine patterns per player is a strong haul — but each one lets your player read a whole sequence rather than a single shot. That is the difference between defending a rally and dictating one.
The shot under stretch, and the shot under pressure
Two defensive tendencies are worth isolating because they're highly reliable and directly exploitable.
The first is the stretch ball — what a player does when pulled wide and hitting on the run. Almost everyone has a default here, and it's usually a compromise shot: a high cross-court floater to buy time, a slice to reset, or a low-percentage down-the-line gamble. Whatever it is, it repeats, because it's an instinct rather than a choice. If you know an opponent floats a high ball cross-court when stretched wide to the backhand, your player can cheat toward that recovery ball and attack it.
The second is the pressure default — the pattern a player narrows to on the biggest points. As with serve scouting, options shrink under pressure: a player who mixes freely at 30-0 will often run one preferred rally shape at 30-40. This mirrors the pressure pass in serve pattern analysis — chart the same directional variables, but only on break points, deuce points, and tiebreak points, then compare against the baseline. The contraction is the edge.
How much footage you actually need
Rally patterns need more footage than serve patterns, and it's worth being honest about why. A player hits 60 to 100 serves in a match, so serve placement stabilises quickly. Genuine neutral rally balls of a specific type — say, a backhand hit from the deuce corner on a break point — are far rarer. You might see only a handful per match.
As a working guide: a single match gives you a directional impression and maybe one clear building pattern. Three matches on the same surface turn impressions into reliable tendencies. Pressure-point rally patterns need pooling across four or five matches before you'd present them as a conclusion rather than a hypothesis. Surface matters more here than almost anywhere else — a player's rally shape on clay, where the extra time rewards patience and court coverage, can look nothing like their pattern on a fast hard court.
Turn the chart into a read
The rally chart, like every scouting artefact, only matters if it compresses into something a player can carry onto the court. A full directional matrix is analyst-facing. The player needs conclusions, expressed as anticipation cues:
- "When you pull her wide to the backhand, expect the high cross-court floater — step in and take it early."
- "He only changes direction off his forehand from inside the baseline. Otherwise the ball stays cross-court — you can commit."
- "On break points he runs the same pattern: deep to your backhand, then forehand to the open court. Be ready to run around it."

The workflow, and the constraint
A thorough rally analysis across three matches is slow work. Neutral rally balls have to be separated from first-strike balls, tagged for direction and wing, then re-reviewed for the repeating chains — and the pressure pass is a second sweep on top of that. For a touring coach who got the draw last night, those are hours that don't exist before the warm-up.
The structure, though, holds regardless of who does the charting: separate the rally from the serve-plus-one phase, track direction before shot type, hunt for the two- and three-ball chains, isolate the stretch ball and the pressure default, and reduce it all to a few anticipation cues. Do that consistently and the rally stops being formless. It becomes a set of shapes your player can see coming.
